Recommendations of European SMEs on investment: Understanding China SME Roundtables 2012

Author : Understanding China

The roundtable discussions in Malta and Stockholm came with some common conclusions concerning investment. European companies are becoming more and more aware that China is shifting growth model and they need to switch their focus from cheap manufacturing to selling their products and services on a market which may well become the world’s largest. New opportunities are opening for SMEs however stronger support is needed at the EU level.

Several key recommendations for the European Commission were highlighted by participants of the two roundtables, namely:

  • Pursue a single European investment policy on behalf of all 27 EU Member States in order to build on best practices from existing bilateral investment treaties with China
  • Demand reciprocity, in particular in these fields:
    • public procurement,
    • the right for EU scientists and scholars to access Chinese-finances research,
    • the right to full and exclusive ownership of a company registered in China
  • Push for China to remove its domestic non-tariff barriers
  • Promote synergies between EU SME-support initiatives in China and promotion facilities from member states
  • Increase the visibility of the EU SME Centre in Beijing
