SME roundtable on EU-China Investments in Valletta, Malta

05/10/2010

As the importance of the Chinese economy continues to grow, so does the topic of Investment in- and from China. This year, China has overtaken Germany as the world’s largest exporter and Japan as the world’s second largest economy. Consequently, China is increasingly being recognised as a market of crucial importance to any company with global ambitions. This is a new development compared to only a few years back, when China was primarily associated with outsourcing and low-cost manufacturing.

When discussing investment and China, it is therefore important to recognise the different aspects of the topic. Looking at the main categories of investment flows between China and the EU, we have:

  • Investing in China for sourcing purposes
  • Investing for market access
  • Investments from China

Some 60 Maltese companies doing business with China have been surveyed. The survey identifies both the sectors they belong to and the activities they undertake in China.
