On Thursday, 02 December 2010, Friends of Europe hosted the second high-level Policy Summit within the Understanding China programme welcoming a few hundred key stakeholders, including senior representatives from EU and international institutions, European and Chinese policymakers, business and industry representatives, social partners, leading academics and members of the international press.
Co-operation between China, the EU and the US is important because no single country can address global challenges on their own, China’s ambassador to the EU Zhe Song told Friends of Europe’s EU-China summit.
China-EU relations are positive overall, added Iliana Ivanova MEP, but issues of contention remain, such as market access, currency appreciation and problems with public procurement. However, pursuit of each group’s own interests is a normal part of international relations and will not jeopardise the tripartite co-operation, Song added.
The sheer dynamism of the Chinese economy and its enormous growth over recent years – a benefit of its integration into the global economic system, requires it to show increased responsibility, something that it increasingly recognises, said Matthew Baldwin, the European Commission’s director for market access.
It is increasingly important for the EU and China to co-operate on reforming global governance and the international financial system, said Cui Hongjian of the China Institute of International Studies. China sees the EU as different to the US, he added, and the two sides face the same challenges, which they should tackle together.
