China’s growing interest in the green economy and its ambition to establish leadership in low-carbon technologies like wind, solar, carbon capture and storage pose both opportunities and risks to European companies. China’s market offers tempting opportunities, but its different legal and political environment raises sensitive questions about intellectual property protection for foreign investors. The Chinese state’s deep financial pockets enable it to buy or protect the resources needed for innovative low-carbon solutions at a time when European governments are struggling with large budget deficits and some even reducing their support for innovative technologies.
Should Europe stick to its commitment to free-trade and globalisation or start protecting its vulnerable green industries?
The China Advisory Council is composed of 17 experts and participation at the China Advisory Council meeting is by personal invitation only. For further information on the China Advisory Council, please refer to the Understanding China programme website or click here for press inquiries.
